HISTORY

The NTMC Academy opened in the fall of 1992 with 12 students.  It was necessary to establish our own private school for three reasons:

  1. Enrolment in the public school system is too costly for non-Canadian families in the Missionary Training Course.
  2. Missionaries in training are transient in the years prior to their departure for overseas ministry. Their children’s adjustments are much easier in a small, private school setting where teachers can be in daily contact with the parents.
  3. The quality of education and Christian philosophy is of utmost importance.

In 1997 the school moved from a small building to its present structure.  Five portables had been donated and subsequent renovations, including a joining hallway, made possible this beautiful building.  Truly a provision from God!

We also praise the Lord for His faithfulness and provision of teaching staff each year.  We consider it a privilege to prepare young lives whom we trust will not only receive a good education but also learn to walk with God.

PURPOSE STATEMENT

To support the efforts of New Tribes Mission of Canada by providing quality education from a Christian perspective for the children of NTMC personnel and children of students in the Missionary Training Course.

PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

We endeavour to work closely with parents to support their responsibility in providing an education for their children.  We emphasize the development of the total person: academically, spiritually, physically and socially.

Academically:

We challenge each student to work toward his potential, recognizing that students may vary as to inherent and acquired capabilities. We endeavour to provide an education that will make it possible to pursue post-secondary education.

Spiritually:

We present God's Word as the truth, and teach Biblical principles.

Physically:

We provide students with opportunities for physical development through athletic programmes. We encourage each student to learn the importance of caring for his body as the temple of the Holy Spirit through proper nutrition, exercise, rest, hygiene, and abstaining from the use of harmful and addictive substances and activities.

Socially:

We help each student develop healthy relationships, treating others with love and respect as persons created in God’s image and becoming citizens with a positive influence.

CURRICULUM

Elementary: Kindergarten – Grade 8

We use mainly A Beka material although teachers have the freedom to switch to or include other curriculums.  French is taught when a teacher is available.

Secondary: Grades 9 - 12

Because of the transient student body, each year’s secondary courses are planned according to student needs. If a teacher is not available or qualified to teach a needed course either an A Beka video program or a correspondence course is arranged.

The following are credit requirements to graduate from NTMC Academy:

  • 4 English
  • 2 Bible (minimum ½ credit for each year in attendance at NTMC Academy)
  • 3 Math
  • 2 Science
  • 2 History (one Canadian History for Canadians)
  • 1 French (or other language)
  • 1 Geography (Canadian Geog. for Canadians)
  • 1 Computer
  • 1 Physical Education
  • 9 elective credits to be selected from available courses
  • 26 total credits required for graduation

NOTE:  Half credit is given for any full credit course successfully completed mid-way.  Since we are not an accredited school students desiring to apply to a University/College in Ontario would be required to take courses either at a public school or online, or take additional courses after graduation.

CO-CURRICULAR

Co-curricular programs/activities are an important part of school life, and are provided as we have staff and/or student interest.  Due to the ever-changing size of our student body we may not be able to provide all the activities each year.

The following activities are organized whenever feasible:

  • Intramural sports
  • Student Council
  • Yearbook
  • Committees and Clubs to meet interests
  • Music
  • Drama
  • Fund Raising (for school trips only): Bike Hikes, Car Washes, Garage Sales, etc.

BOARDING PROGRAM

We have no dorms; all students in the Academy live at home with their parents.

Teachers in our Academy must have a faithful walk with God, a gift in teaching children, and a desire to serve.
