Drew Callahan, a student from Letourneau University spent two weeks in Senegal getting a first-hand look at missionary aviation. NTM missionary pilot Jim Stewart and his son Jimmy worked with Drew on several projects.
The first project was scraping rust, repairing and then repainting the hangar doors. Then they installed an intercom system in the mission office, repaired a co-worker's van and painted around the Stewart's home. Drew found out that a missionary pilot does more than fly a plane. He also discovered that missionary pilots can be called at anytime to go anywhere to provide life-saving help to missionaries.
On a hot Saturday in August, Drew accompanied the Stewart family for a few days of relaxation at an area beach. Sunday afternoon Jim got a call requesting an emergency medevac flight. Four year-old Lenaya Hefner had been sick for several days and now had a temperature of 105 degrees. She needed to see a doctor in the capital city as soon as possible. The Hefners live in a remote village in eastern Senegal and an overland trip would take all day.
Jim, Jimmy and Drew returned and began preparing the plane for the emergency flight. The Hefner family landed in the capital city by noon on Monday and Lenaya was able to see the doctor that afternoon. She was given medication and she and her family are now back home in the village.
Pray that God will give wisdom and direction to Drew as he considers his future plans. Pray also for safety for Jim as he provides flight service to missionaries in Senegal.
