IS IT TIME TO TAKE REVENGE?

Dinangat men having a discussion.

October 15, 2009

by David Bell

Dinangat believers in Papua New Guinea are facing a situation that is trying their faith and teaching them to rely on God.

Two weeks ago a government school office in a Dinangat village was set on fire and burned to the ground. The office stored all of the books and materials for the school. All that was left was a big black spot on the ground.

The whole village came together that morning and was shocked as they saw what had happened. Some women started crying. "Who was that?" "Why did they do that?" "We will pay them back for sure."

In the Dinangat culture it speaks of courage and strength if someone is able to pay back a wrongdoing. If a man doesn\'t pay back a wrong he is called a "woman." For the new believers old customs are hard to die. It seems especially hard for the men.

But God is changing some hearts.

"It is not our work to pay back the wrongdoings of unbelievers," one woman said. "That is God\'s work. He will do that. Our new faith in Christ makes us peaceful within, not angry."

Please pray that the Dinangat believers will learn to listen to the Holy Spirit who indwells them and learn to walk according to His will. Pray too that the missionary team will have wisdom as they disciple the believers and help them walk in their faith.
