Appreciated Securities
The Canadian government has made it advantageous for you to donate appreciated publicly traded securities (e.g. stocks, bonds and mutual funds) by significantly reducing the taxable portion of any capital gains that might apply. Our Finance Department can help you or your broker transfer securities or mutual funds to NTMC.
Depreciated Securities
Perhaps you are considering making a donation of securities which have depreciated in value. If so, your tax advisor may confirm a strategy of selling these securities at a loss and using the losses to offset other gains reportable on your tax return. The cash from sale proceeds can then be donated to NTMC.
Other Gifts In Kind
Canadian tax laws also allow for the donation of other forms of assets. The donor receives a receipt based upon the Fair Market Value of the asset. Please note that gifts of this nature must first be approved by NTMC and that the donor will be responsible for obtaining an appraisal from a qualified appraiser to determine the Fair Market Value of the property.
We would be happy to discuss any of these options with you.
